Encore Apprentice Program

A CCT & WYSO Partnership

The Encore Apprentice Program is a premier pre-professional collaboration between Capital City Theatre (CCT) and the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras (WYSO). Launching in September 2026, this competitive, no-cost internship is designed for advanced instrumentalists seeking to master the working aspects of the pit. Students will gain unparalleled access to professional musical theatre production, moving beyond the music stand to learn how a professional orchestra integrates with live performance, sound technology, and conducting leadership.

1. The Supervisor Track (Level 1: Non-Playing)

Designed for students interested in the "why" and "how" of a production, focusing on conducting, cueing, and management.

  • Rehearsal Access: Attend all orchestral and sitzprobe rehearsals to observe the blending of instrumentation with vocals.

  • Music Director Meetings: Observe Music Director during certain special production meetings to see how musical vision aligns with lighting, staging, and sound.

  • Pit Auditing: Shadow the conductor or section leaders during live shows to learn pit etiquette and real-time adjustments.

  • Deliverable: Completion of an Observation Journal/Review.

Program Structure & Tracks

An intensive "side-by-side" experience for advanced musicians ready to integrate into a professional ensemble.

  • Active Participation: Rehearse as a playing member of the ensemble and "double" with a professional mentor for direct feedback on phrasing and theatrical timing.

  • Pit Integration: Sit and play in the pit during live performances for either the full run or selected shows.

  • Mentorship: Receive personalized training sessions with a principal player and music director to discuss the professional industry and book nuances. All interactions with students will follow the Rule of Three supervision.

  • Deliverable: Live Performance Credit.
